New Programme Launch at Gulu University, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment
Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, Gulu University Launches the Bachelor of Science in Agri-entrepreneurship and Communication Management (BSc.ACM).
The Faculty of Agriculture and Environment is mandated to train manpower at undergraduate and graduate levels, carry out research, and provide outreach ser¬vices right from primary production to marketing. This is in line with the vision of Gulu University “To provide access to higher education, research and conduct qual¬ity professional training for the delivery of appropriate services directed towards community transformation and conservation of biodiversity. Our location in a prime agricultural area offers a unique learning environment where students can interact with farming and business communities. Our training emphasises hands-on skills development, entrepreneurial skills development and sustainable natural resource use.
The development of BSc. ACM curriculum was motivated by the fact that current agricultural graduates are neither adequately grounded to serve as social entrepreneurs nor as knowledge management workers for agri-enterprises development. Furthermore, current graduates are not prepared to practice as professionals of agricultural communication and broadcasting using modern techniques, methods, and equipment of documentation for enhancing agricultural actors’ learning and visibility of agricultural innovations. The program aims to produce practical agri-entrepreneurs capable of establishing own profitable agri-entreprises and effectively communicate agricultural innovation information.
The BSc.ACM offers three unique training approaches:
• Equipping students with business development, management and communication skills using the supervised students’ enterprise project (SSEP). SSEP emphasises a practical orientation to agribusiness development services and agri-entrepreneurship with a strong focus on students developing business plans and supporting them to implement such plans in the course of their training.
• Using the innovative Student-Centred-Outreach (S-C-O) model to train students. The S-C-O model ensures that student acquire adequate real learning through experiences with the communities through attachment to the farming households in the community right from year one till the end of the 4 years.
• A highly dynamic curriculum, evolving with lessons drawn from the community, industry and the agribusiness sector for continuous review and improvement.
Graduates of BSc. ACM, will be capable of identifying business opportunities in the agri-industry, plan, establish and manage profitable own agri-enterprises; work in various agri-industry-related establishments and provide advisory services in the agricultural and agri-business sector.
BSc. ACM is a four (4) year program. For admission to this program, a candidate should have sat the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent examination with passes in five approved subjects including a credit in Mathematics; and should have obtained at least two principal passes in any of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Agriculture, Geography, Entrepreneurship and Mathematics at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) at the same sitting.
